Leybourne Lakes Country Park
A large lakeside country park offering walking routes, fishing lakes, open-water swimming and family activities, with wide skies and a peaceful edge-of-town feel.
Leybourne Lakes Country Park is built around water. Broad open lakes edged by gravel paths, young woodland and stretches of open grassland. Just off the M2 and clearly signed, the site feels surprisingly expansive once inside, with wide skies and long views across the open spaces and water.
In early morning the atmosphere is calm and unhurried. The main swimming lake, used for paddle boarding and open-water swimming in warmer months, can feel almost still outside the season, occasionally occupied only by maintenance teams checking the water. At this time of year activity shifts toward walking and fishing, giving the landscape a quieter character.
Paths are mostly level and accessible, though after rain the gravel and grass can become wet and muddy underfoot. Routes loop between exposed open areas and more sheltered sections beneath trees, passing through woodland and along natural lake edges. The terrain is flat enough for pushchairs and children on small bikes, and the park is especially popular with dog walkers, with off-lead areas where dogs run freely across the grass.
Several lakes serve different purposes. Around the fishing lakes, anglers sit quietly at the water’s edge, often set up for long stays with chairs, flasks and small shelters. These areas feel hushed and enclosed compared to the open central spaces. Despite nearby housing and the distant motorway the sound carries faintly, allowing a sense of separation from surrounding Nordic style housing development.
Play areas near the main routes draw families, while quieter paths offer space to walk without interruption. In autumn the mix of open sky, falling leaves and reflective water creates a particularly gentle atmosphere. Peaceful, spacious and far removed from the intensity of more formal recreation sites.
Leybourne Lakes functions as both an activity destination and an everyday outdoor space: somewhere to fish, swim or take part in watersports, but just as often somewhere simply to walk, reset and spend time outdoors.
