There is a certain honesty in what Strood is — what you see is what you get. And that’s no bad thing. What may surprise you, though, is the quality of its food scene, shaped by a diverse community and a growing number of family-run independent restaurants.

Jerk Cafe sits among a small parade of shops and restaurants just opposite the local landmark of St Nicholas Church on Strood High Street. If you haven’t spotted it, you’ll almost certainly have smelt it — the unmistakable aroma of jerk chicken slowly smoking in preparation for the evening service. The café sometimes opens a little later than most, and we don’t mind at all. It simply means the meat and fish have been seasoned longer and cooked low and slow, resulting in a deeply flavourful feast that falls off the bone.

Inside, the space is intimate yet welcoming. Bright lights reflect off white interiors and simple white plates, allowing the food to take centre stage. A large flat-screen TV plays reggae music videos, while the bar at the back is well stocked with Jamaican favourites — think rum punch, Guinness Punch, Ting, or Dragon Stout.

This is not a pretentious Jamaican ‘wannabe’ chain, the sort you might find elsewhere, where interior design takes priority over what’s on the plate. Jerk Cafe is about properly cooked, home-style food, done with care and confidence - certainly a skill in itself.

Order the escoveitch fish, marinated in spices with red pepper and onion, served alongside boiled rice, or the slow-cooked oxtail stew with rice and peas. This family-run spot has quickly become a much-loved addition to the high street. The staff are happy to talk you through the menu and offer recommendations with a smile, and it’s no surprise weekends are lively, with a DJ spinning the tracks in the background.

It’s a little slice of Jamaica in Strood — a place to sit, take your time, eat well, and leave with your belly full.
