Isaan Thai
A north-eastern Thai restaurant on Strood High Street known for bold flavours, traditional interiors and an unhurried dining atmosphere.
When people think about Medway’s food scene, they usually settle on Rochester’s historic high street. Over the decades, independent restaurateurs have shaped its reputation to build something that draws in the crowds from beyond the Medway towns themselves.
But cross Rochester Bridge and keep walking towards Strood High Street. This high street is a short stretch which is often passed through rather than paused ‘on’. Isaan Thai sits on a parade a few doors along from the Jerk Cafe. The exterior is unassuming and would be easily overlooked if you did not know it was there.
Step beyond the threshold and the atmosphere shifts.
The walls are painted an exotic orange, warming the room instantly – bringing a little bit of Thailand to Strood. Dark wood relief carvings of elephants hang on the wall as decorative features. Patterned straw fans and golden Buddha statues welcome you in. Woven placemats rest on Pikul-patterned table-clothes. Thai music plays softly in the background. Staff move between the tables in traditional dress with Thai silk details adding to authenticity and attention to detail.
The kitchen focuses on the bold, bright flavours of north-eastern Thailand. Isaan Cuisine is known for its heat, balance and depth. Broths, sticky rice, fresh herbs and chillies form the backbone of the menu. Dishes can be adjusted to your liking, from a gentle warmth to full-on intensity.
Beef Pad Gra-Paow is a standout dish. Generous portions, fragrant and built around fresh vegetables and lots of chilli. Paired with jasmine tea served in a patterned pot, the meal feels unhurried and comforting rather than showy.
Over the years Isaan Thai has quietly built a loyal following in Strood and beyond. It may sit outside the usual Medway dining spot but that is part of its charm. Isaan is a place that is discovered by those who are willing to cross the bridge.
