Nothing beats wandering Rochester High Street under the soft warmth of late-morning sun, moving between the bustle of visitors and locals as the cathedral towers quietly above. Rochester Cathedral is a place many return to, a sanctuary for sitting, thinking, and admiring its storied interior, and while its crypt café is well loved, we often suggest heading out of the main exit and continuing left towards the war memorial gardens. Cross the road from here and you’ll find The Rochester Coffee Co.

Directly opposite the gardens, you can’t miss the neatly arranged cakes displayed under glass domes in the window, quietly tempting tired legs, the curious and the hungry inside.

A small set of steps leads into a bright, softly panelled space. Off-white walls, blush-toned tiles and large mirrors gently open up the room, while wooden worktops warm the modern interior. Here, piping-hot coffees and teas sit briefly alongside generous slices of cake before being carried to waiting tables.

Even if you only stop in for a quick visit, it rarely stays that way. The food is thoughtfully presented and served by notably friendly staff. Whether it’s a moreish brie sourdough toastie, a generously filled smoked salmon sandwich, or simply a freshly baked pastry with a well-ground roast coffee, you’ll likely leave satisfied and already planning a return visit that lasts just a little longer next time.
