Upnor
A historic riverside village where the River Medway meets the estuary, known for its castle, pubs, quiet walks and maritime heritage.
There are villages that invite you to pause almost without asking. Upnor is one of them.
Set on the western edge of the Hoo Peninsula, where the River Medway gradually widens towards the Thames Estuary, Upnor feels quietly removed from the pace of nearby towns. Cobbled streets, weatherboard cottages and old brick buildings sit alongside the river much as they have for generations, creating a landscape that rewards slow exploration.
Although compact, the village carries an importance that stretches far beyond its size. Built to protect Chatham Dockyard, Upnor Castle has watched over this bend of the Medway for more than four centuries. During the Dutch Raid of 1667, enemy ships sailed these same waters, revealing weaknesses in England's naval defences and forever securing Upnor's place in British maritime history.
Today the atmosphere is very different.
Riverside pubs overlook moored yachts that rise and fall gently with the tide, while narrow lanes reveal unexpected views across the estuary. Former military buildings have found quieter purposes, now home to independent cafés and restaurants that continue the village's story in new ways.
Exploring Upnor can be as short or as long as you choose. Wander the cobbled High Street, explore the castle grounds, follow the riverside promenade past the Arethusa figurehead or continue along the King Charles III England Coast Path - where marshland gradually replaces the village behind you.
Throughout the seasons the landscape changes with the tide. At low water, wide stretches of sand and mud emerge beneath the boats, while birdlife gathers along the estuary and the changing light transforms the river from morning through to sunset.
Upnor isn't a place of grand attractions or hurried itineraries. It is somewhere to slow down, notice the landscape and enjoy one of Medway's most peaceful riverside villages.
If you'd like to experience the village at a gentler pace, our story A Quiet Walk Through Upnor follows one of our favourite routes through the village and along the estuary.
