Lenny’s of Rochester

An independent High Street bakery and café known for generous sweet treats, classic bakes and informal upstairs dining.

With a presence on the High Street for over 37 years, the bakery was previously run by Tony Lorenzo before being sold in 2021 and rebranded as Lenny’s of Rochester. As a result, it carries a long-standing familiarity. It’s a steady presence woven into the fabric of life in Rochester and its daily routines.

On entry, the bakery counter sits at ground level, and the windows draw in passing trade with trays of savouries with a twist, oversized sausage rolls and samosas. Toward the back, a small staircase leads up to a spacious sit-down area for breakfast and lunch.

The counter display is generous. Think old-school vanilla sponge ‘School Cake’ topped with thick icing and rainbow sprinkles, classic Kentish gypsy tarts and fudgy brownies. Lenny’s also sells the iconic London cheesecake (rarely seen elsewhere now) offered in substantial slices, alongside its signature cheesecake served in individual pots, rich and large enough to share. The baking schedule is reassuringly consistent: fresh trays appear on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, making those mornings particularly tempting for a return visit.

The savoury offering balances familiar classics with small variations, and upstairs the atmosphere remains relaxed and unhurried. Staff remember regulars and often suggest something new from the counter, reinforcing the sense of a business run with care rather than speed.

For many, Lenny’s is a fixture of the High Street community. It is the kind of place to stop after a long walk through to Chatham Intra to Sun Pier and back again, or after a cathedral loop and around historic Rochester. When the steps have added up something sweet from Lenny’s feels quietly earned. Dogs aren’t permitted inside, but the welcome remains warm.

Lenny’s is less about novelty and more about continuity: a bakery and café that rewards repeat visits, where generosity in smiles and portion sizes still feels like the default setting.

In 2023, the business expanded with the opening of Lenny’s of Eastgate, opposite Rochester Library - a separate location that is dog friendly.
