Something playful stirs on the high street. The Little Shop is a gift and souvenir shop, but with a modern, playful twist. Forget the usual line-up of branded pens, rulers, erasers and snow globes. Here, the shelves are filled with something far more interesting: a colourful mix of work from local makers, artists and designers.

Located towards the Eastgate end of Rochester High Street, in the former home of Get Ready Comics, The Little Shop makes full use of its large-paned frontage. Posters, prints and vibrant displays immediately spark curiosity. The designs range from the abstract to playful takes on Dickens and familiar local landmarks.

Inside, white walls and simple displays allow the products to take centre stage. Candles, mugs, cards, posters, tea towels and plenty more fill the shop, but despite the variety, it does not feel like a random collection of gifts. There is a very clear personality behind what has been chosen. Fun, quirky and sometimes knowingly irreverent, the shop feels unapologetically playful.

Some of the most memorable pieces take familiar Medway references and turn them into something worth taking home. Even Foghorn, Chatham’s much-loved sculpture, appears complete with the traffic cone that locals repeatedly place on its head. The joke is reimagined across keyrings, prints and other pieces.

The sense of local connection runs deeper than the products on the shelves. Owners Dan and Neil are also behind Rochester Life, a free local magazine covering events, places and life around Medway. The shop is also connected with The Little Market, bringing independent makers and small creative businesses together at Rochester Corn Exchange.

The building has its own layers of history. No. 168 High Street is a Grade II listed building with sections dating back several centuries, continuing a long history of trade in this part of Rochester.

What makes The Little Shop particularly worth seeking out, though, is its energy. The owners’ personalities are stamped all over the space, but so too is their enthusiasm for other people’s work. By giving local artists, designers and makers somewhere visible to sell what they create, the shop has become part of a wider network quietly championing independent creativity in Medway.

The Little Shop is suited to locals looking for an unusual gift and visitors wanting to take home a little something that actually feels connected to Rochester and Medway. There is plenty to browse, with something for almost every budget, so allow longer than you might expect.
