Gift Ideas in Rochester & Nearby

A considered guide to thoughtful gifts, local finds and experiences across Rochester, Medway and nearby.

You really don’t have to buy another last-minute bottle of perfume or aftershave. Across Rochester, Medway and this corner of Kent are independent shops, makers and places offering something far more special. There are rare second-hand books and vinyl records, locally made chocolate and wine, alongside vineyard tours, gin-tasting experiences, workshops, days out and even a French-polishing course. This is our considered guide to gifts for the difficult to buy for, birthdays, Christmas and everything in between — or simply just because.

For the music lover

Analogue Music, Rochester, ME1: Stocking a cross-section of genres, from funk and soul to dance, rock and pop, Analogue Music is a firm favourite on Rochester High Street. Don’t know the recipient’s favourite artist but know the kind of music they listen to? Tell Alistair or Hannah. Both are incredibly knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction. The brown paper bag the vinyl is slipped into somehow makes it feel even more special than having to gift wrap.

LV21, Chatham, ME4: How about tickets to a gig or live performance in the intimate surroundings of a former bright-red lightship? Quietly unexpected, LV21 is now moored at the Historic Dockyard Chatham and hosts an eclectic programme of events throughout the year. Keep an eye on what’s coming up and choose a performance for that particular someone in mind.

Rochester Castle Concerts, Rochester, ME1: Maybe they would prefer the festival atmosphere at Rochester Castle Gardens, listening to live music beneath the gaze of the Norman keep. When the summer programme is announced, usually in spring, a pair of tickets can make a memorable gift - particularly if dancing to live music as the sun sets over the River Medway sounds like their kind of evening.

For the bookworm

Baggins Book Bazaar, Rochester, ME1: A vast second-hand bookshop stocking books for all manner of tastes and ages. It’s simply a joy to browse the labyrinth of bookshelves, hunting out a special find for someone else. If you’re looking for the latest blockbuster read, this is probably not the bookshop for you. But if it’s unusual, out of print or difficult to find, you may just find it here.

Store 104, Rochester, ME1: Its home is in Rochester High Street’s former family-owned department store, where books, yarn and coffee are now found under one roof. Alongside new titles are beautiful editions, children’s books, stationery, artisan products and cards, making it an easy place to find something thoughtful without necessarily knowing exactly what you’re looking for when you walk through the door.

For the creative

Hometown, Rochester, ME1: One for lovers of fabric and making, Hometown is Rochester’s home of colour and cloth, with shelves filled with cottons and linens from names including Liberty, Moda and Ruby Star.Perhaps you know someone already skilled at making with fabric, or a beginner wanting to explore an interest. Workshops take place in the spacious basement studio and cater for different levels. Gift cards can be purchased and used towards products or workshops.

The Wooden Mouse, Rochester, ME1: This might just be one of the more unusual gift ideas in our guide: a French-polishing course on Rochester’s historic High Street. At The Wooden Mouse, traditional French polishing is taught by master French polisher Stewart Kemp, whose career has included work for high-end London hotels including Claridge’s. Choose from a one-day course or a condensed evening course, learning basic techniques and putting them into practice on a wooden door wedge. Other courses include upholstery and restoration, with students learning traditional skills under the guidance of experienced craftspeople.

Intra Arts, Rochester, ME1: An arts venue and makers’ space in Chatham Intra, housed inside a beautiful Art Deco building. Medway Fine Printmakers is based here, with workshops covering techniques such as screen printing, linocut and relief printing. Classes are available for both young people and adults, including small-group and one-to-one sessions. Gift vouchers can be purchased. For something a little different, Fancy Tat also runs a three-hour glass-bottle-cutting workshop at Intra. Learn glass cutting and sanding techniques before leaving with something made by your own hands. Gift certificates available.

Medway Adult Education, Rochester, ME1: Why not buy someone a place on a creative course? Based at Rochester Adult Education Centre, opposite Eastgate House just off the historic High Street, the programme covers a wide range of interests. Learn to use a potter’s wheel, work with stained glass, sew, draw or explore another creative skill. Both longer courses and shorter workshops are available, making this an option for someone looking to try something new without committing to months of study.

For the art lover

For the wine, whisky or gin lover

Meopham Valley Vineyard, Meopham DA13: Give them a vineyard tour and wine tasting. On the slopes of the North Downs in Meopham, this family-run vineyard produces a selection of English still and sparkling wines in a beautiful rural setting. Its vineyard tour and wine tasting offers the chance to learn more about the vines, the landscape and the wines produced here. Experiences can be purchased as gifts, making this one to consider for someone who would rather spend an afternoon among the vines than simply receive another bottle.

Dickens Wine Emporium, Rochester, ME1: Buy them a bottle for the table. In the heart of Rochester High Street, Dickens Wine Emporium has been serving the town for more than 25 years. If you’re unsure where to begin, ask for a recommendation. The shelves include wines from France, Spain and Italy alongside a good selection produced closer to home in Kent.

The distillery oversees the process from grain to glass, producing gin, vodka and whisky. Rather than choosing a bottle, you could give one of its experiences instead, from Dockyard Gin and whisky tastings to the more involved whisky-blending experience. The riverside setting makes the visit part of the gift.

For the gamer, collector and curious

Playopolis, Rochester, ME1: Rather than adding another box to the board-game collection at home, give them somewhere to play. Playopolis has been bringing people together around tabletop games for more than a decade. Its extensive games library makes it a hub for local gamers and tabletop enthusiasts, but it is equally welcoming to families, couples and those who simply fancy trying something new. Gift vouchers are available, making it a particularly useful option for families, couples or Secret Santa.

Far from intimidating, it’s a place to browse graphic novels, Funko Pop figures, Loungefly bags, trading cards and other collectables, whether you know exactly what they are into or need a little guidance.

I Dig Dinos, Rochester, ME1: A shop filled with fossils, minerals and crystals, appealing to serious collectors as much as curious first-time visitors. Look out for dinosaur bones, fish fossils, meteorites and other prehistoric finds, with knowledgeable staff on hand to help choose. A particularly good stop for a dinosaur-mad children, a teenager with an eye for crystals or someone who’s just fascinated by the natural world.

Set within a former chalk quarry in Halling, St Andrews Lakes is known for its striking blue water and secluded setting. Gift vouchers can be used across activities including the aqua park, kayaking, paddle boarding, zip wire and tuition, as well as spa and wellness experiences, yoga, Pilates and breathwork. It leaves the recipient to decide whether their idea of a treat involves getting the blood rushing or just slowing down.

For the history lover

Restoration House, Rochester, ME1: A season ticket to Restoration House offers something rather different: the chance to return throughout its seasonal opening months and enjoy this extraordinary house and its gardens again and again. The atmospheric city mansion dates largely from the Elizabethan period and is known for hosting Charles II on the eve of the Restoration and for its association with Satis House in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Still a private home, its interiors contain a remarkable collection of antiques, paintings, furniture and a small tearoom. Beyond them lies an unexpectedly large walled garden, with an Italian Renaissance water garden and glasshouses.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham, Chatham ME4: Give the gift of a year of visits to one of Medway’s largest historic sites. Spanning around 80 acres and more than 400 years of Royal Navy history, the Historic Dockyard Chatham brings together historic ships, a submarine, the Victorian Ropery and the buildings and open spaces of a once-busy working dockyard. For fans of Call the Midwife, dedicated location tours also take place here and can be booked separately.

For the theatre lover

Central Theatre, Chatham ME4: Buy them tickets to the theatre - or let them decide what they would like to see. The Central Theatre on Chatham High Street has a traditional horseshoe auditorium and a varied programme of live entertainment, from comedy and music to pantomime, drama and family performances. A theatre voucher gives the recipient the freedom to wait for something that catches their eye rather than you making the choice for them.

The Brook Theatre, Chatham ME4: The Central’s beautiful sister venue occupies Chatham’s former Town Hall and has long served as an arts and community space. The Brook is currently closed while a major restoration takes place, with reopening planned for 2028. Its historic interiors make it one to remember when the doors open again.

For the four-legged friend

Hound Hut, Rochester, ME1: Perhaps the easiest family member to buy for. A boutique pet shop and grooming parlour on Rochester High Street, packed with natural treats and food, alongside toys, leads, collars beds and other considered accessories for dogs and cats. Pick a toy for birthdays or training treats for under the Christmas tree – though it will probably be sniffed out way before Christmas Day!

For something to unwrap

Sometimes you simply want something to wrap. Rochester High Street has plenty of options. Empire leans towards British subculture, music and film, while RED approaches menswear through clean lines, fit and fabric. Rocket mixes 1950s-inspired fashion with homeware, plants and smaller gifts. Flowers can be picked up at Ginger Lily in Rochester, while The Bloom Room in Strood offers another option, including flower subscriptions for a gift that continues beyond the day itself. For something rooted more closely in place, The Little Shop (one of our favs) is filled with cards, stationery, seasonal gifts, souvenirs and locally made or Medway-inspired finds catering for every budget. There is plenty to choose from without travelling very far.

Christmas gifts in Rochester & Medway

At Christmas, Rochester High Street is particularly easy to shop on foot, with independent shops running along a relatively short stretch. Rochester Christmas Market adds a changing collection of makers and traders around the Castle Gardens during the festive season.

Because the traders vary year to year, we treat the market as somewhere to browse rather than recommend individual stalls. If you’re shopping closer to Christmas Day, many of the places in this guide also offer e-vouchers, gift cards or online ordering.
