A colourful contemporary gallery tucked inside The Wooden Mouse, bringing together original art and work by independent makers on Rochester High Street.
When Frances Lles art gallery closed after more than 40 years of trade on Rochester High Street, it marked the end of an important chapter for many local artists, creatives and regular visitors. It was long home to framing, gifts and original artwork with an upstairs gallery that championed local artists its walls brimming with paintings available to purchase.
Thankfully the tradition hasn’t disappeared altogether and can be found at a smaller scale across the road in the upper levels of Store 104.
Medway has a thriving community of artist, makers and crafters. Many can be found working quietly in the studios of the Intra building and the Tack Room located in Chatham Intra - Medway’s creative quarter, found on the stretch of road between Rochester High Street and Chatham. Here you’ll find a printmaking studio and community courses.
At the other end of Rochester High Street, quietly adding to Medway’s creative landscape is Heather Christie Art Gallery, bringing colour back to the high street though strokes of acrylic, textiles and craft.
The gallery can be found in the front room of The Wooden Mouse, a Grade II listed building painted pale sky-blue on the parade just beyond The Cheese Room toward Rochester Bridge. Stepping over the threshold, your eyes are met with a riot of colour across the walls, the glass cabinets and tables.
Despite the colour, the gallery feels calm, encouraging visitors to slow down and explore. Unlike a traditional commercial gallery, it forms part of The Wooden Mouse where French polishing and furniture restoration continue to be taught in the backrooms beyond the gallery. Heather Christie has transformed the front rooms into a contemporary gallery. It provides a space for artists, designers and makers to showcase their work. All items are available to purchase.
Heather’s own acrylic paintings provide a focal point, ranging from dramatic views of Rochester Cathedral and Castle silhouetted by deep red skies to wildlife and portraits of iconic musicians. Permanent collections like modern-edged jewellery by Elsie and May sit beside a changing selection of work from other artists and makers, so there's always something new to discover.
Heather also supports local charities including Fenn Bell Conservation and Dandelions through her artwork.
